Episode 13 – 2nd Peter 3:1-18

We laughed at the over-the-top reaction to the VMA debacle (more over the top than the performance?) and got around to finishing 2nd Peter.  Inquisition: Pastor talked about Lutheran confirmation practices; Thomas reminisced about meeting James White last weekend.

Episode 13 – 2nd Peter 3:1-18

Full Description:

Initially we discussed the way-too-publicised outrage at this past weekend’s VMA awards (and learned from Tom how not to pronounce “lascivious”), then it was back into the text to finish off 2nd Peter.  We talked a bit about the popular idea about heaven and contrasted that with the Christian confession that we will live forever in a new heaven AND a new earth, bodies and all.  During the inquisition Pastor avoided landmines to discuss the Lutheran practice of “confirmation” and Thomas talked about his trip to Pryor, OK to meet James White this past weekend. All done with a studio audience consisting solely of Tom’s fiance.

Episode 12 – 2nd Peter 2:10b-2:22

Full Description:

We began by talking about Pastor’s sermon from this previous weekend for about 10 minutes, and then dove back into 2nd Peter to finish out chapter 2.  Inquisition: Pastor asked Thomas to about what the difference in approach might be when talking with someone about sin, between when it is something they do vs. something a loved one does.  Thomas asked Pastor about the meaning and import of the phrase “Christian freedom”.  Pastor recommended Martin Luther’s work, “The Freedom of a Christian”, which has been added to the theology section of the Count Joy store!

Episode 11 – 2nd Peter 1:13-2:10a

We continued through the book of 2nd Peter. Inquisition: Thomas talked about the “Myth of Neutrality”; Pastor dealt with what we might call “sanctified lying” – that is, why Rahab and the Hebrew midwives were not necessarily violating the 8th commandment.

Episode 11 – 2nd Peter 1:13-2:10a

Full Description:

We jumped back into 2nd Peter 1:13-2:10a and spent some good time talking about Peter’s desire to leave some words for the Church as his passing was near (1:13-15).  We discussed the nature of Scripture’s witness about Christ (1:16-21), as well as the false teachers who twist it to their own destruction (2:1-10a).  And more!  Inquisition: Pastor asked Thomas to elaborate on the “Myth of Neutrality”; Thomas asked Pastor why it is that Rahab and the Hebrew midwives who lied to Pharaoh were blessed for their lies.

Episode 10 – 2nd Peter 1:1-1:12

Began 2nd Peter with discussion about certain quirks of the text before getting in for 12 whole verses! Inquisition: Pastor talks about his 3 favorite Luther quotes, while Thomas deals with what he considers the most common mistake in Christian witnessing.

Episode 10 – 2nd Peter 1:1-1:12

Full Description:

Opened up with a conversation about 2nd Peter’s similarities with Jude and the question of what the identity of the false teachers he mentions are.  Got through some dense portion of the text in this episode.  During the inquisition, Pastor was asked for his personal favorite Luther quote, and gave 3 that he likes.  Thomas was asked what the most common mistake made in Christian interactions with unbelievers, and there is discussion on the answer.
